Beauty Budget Tips

Each season, I am tempted to buy everything trendy, and with each seasonal change, my skincare routine needs a little upgrade too. Being a hardcore beauty junkie isn’t easy, especially in this economy. Here are some tips for those who are about to spend big on the latest fall colors and new products that promise you the moon:

The 70/30 rule

Whether you actually have a budget, or you periodically splurge and suffer later, you can always use this golden ratio to help prioritize what to splurge on, and what to save. To avoid overspending, 70% of your skincare and makeup should be everyday essentials, leaving 30% of your budget to play around with seasonal colors. This way you don’t overshop the trends. Read more…

New: Dior 2009 Holiday Palettes

I LOVE palettes, and I love how companies release holiday palettes early! As much as I love Bobbi Brown’s practical palettes, I love Dior’s even more. For starters, their palettes always come with a beautifully designed Dior pouch each. Read more…

Picture Product Review: Shiseido The Makeup Perfect Mascara

The really good thing about this mascara is that it does an amazing job of separating and lengthening the lashes, and holding up the curls. The wearability is up to Shiseido’s standards – it is smudge free, which is better than even Lancome’s Hypnose or Diorshow Black Out mascaras, which tend to make their way down half way through the day.

2009 Summer Makeup Highlights

Here in this part of the world, we aren’t having much of a summer yet. With temperatures barely reaching 23 on a good day, we have to wonder whether Toronto will see a raging hot summer this year, something we get to enjoy only 2 months a year (if we are lucky)!

As summer rages on elsewhere, so does makeup. Although recession hits globally, there are still some major summer releases by major brands. Here are some of the highlights of new releases:

Product Review: DiorSnow Sublissime Whitening Lotion (Moisture)

With the exception of Sekkisei Cosmetic Lotion, I generally don’t find any toners to have brightening effects when used as toners. Because toners are only Step 2 preparation (pre-treatment) items and should be used in conjunction with another whitening treatment product (moisturizer, cream or essence) to achieve results, I tend not to expect too much and only want them to be hydrating for my dehydrated, dry and sensitive skin.

The Diorsnow Sublissime Whitening Lotion II (Moisture) that I used was no different from many other non-Sekkisei lotions – while it was hydrating as a toner, it didn’t lighten my light freckles – not alone anyway. I was using another whitening cream (by Lancome) at the same time I was using Diorsnow Whitening Lotion and neither worked to lighten my freckles.

Mascara Showdown: Diorshow Black Out v. Lancome Hypnose

There was a time when I didn’t think a US$24.00 mascara is any different from a US$7.00 mascara, but ever since Hypnose, I am a changed woman! And once you have used a great mascara like Hypnose (by Lancome), you can never go back to cheap drug store brands again!

When I ran out of Hypnose, I was curious to try another popular mascara that has generated so much buzz (if not more than Hypnose). Diorshow has a variety of mascaras that are all the rage these days, reaching a monstrous cult status quickly after their launch. So naturally I just have to try at least one!
