Product *Sample* Review: The History of Whoo Bichup Ja Saeng Essence

The History of Whoo Bichup Ja Saeng Essence, 45ml
The History of Whoo Bichup Ja Saeng Essence, 45ml

This is a healing, regenerative serum for a variety of skin troubles. It claims to improve elasticity, moisturize and lessen the appearance of wrinkles, and I definitely need something for my fine lines on my forehead! I have a 2 week supply of this essence, which I used day and night for the past 2 weeks. And here is my review after two weeks, the amount of time that this product claims will give you results:

It is definitely a lot more hydrating than Soo Yeon essence (Soo Yeon is a light hydrating series I find) and Gongjinhyang:Seol Whitening Essence (which isn’t meant to be hydrating), if I were to compare among the 3 from the Whoo lineup, just so you have an idea. The texture is slightly sticky to the touch, and is noticeably more emollient once you apply it on your face. It is a dark brown serum (I find that it’s more like a serum than an essence) and a little bit goes a long way. After application, my skin looked more plump, moist and smooth.

As far as the healing properties go, for a few days  my skin was really dehydrated, to a point that I got some bumps from the dryness (I had a head cold – one of many that my 3 year old daughter brings home from school constantly!). I had that uncomfortable itch, peeling skin and even when I put heavy cream on top, my skin would revert back to its dehydrated state once the hydration wore off. I started using Bichup Ja Saeng at the time of my cold which was 2 weeks ago, and I did notice that the redness, itchiness and severe dehydration (my skin is still dehydrated, but not as bad) were gone. I still used my other skincare (from Whoo) along with this essence, but this essence really did its job.

2 weeks later, I still have fine lines on my forehead (I don’t expect these to go away so quickly anyway), but my skin got better. I don’t have sagging skin so I can’t attest to its lifting properties yet.

Bottom line: I like this essence. It is twice as expensive as the Soo Yeon essence but I would rather spend the extra 50% on a product that works and hydrates deeply. Right now though, I think su:m37 Secret Programming Essence will be my new HG essence so I won’t be purchasing the full size Ja Saeng essence until after I finish su:m37’s.

    Hi Joseibi!

I absolutely love your blog! I bought the full size version of this product, and having fine lines around my eyes and forehead, I decided to give this a try. I am 43, and have dry skin. It has been over 2 months, and you can barely notice them. My skin is so refined, and smooth, and has a glow. This product really helped with my wrinkles! I wonder how the $800 dollar cream would work!!! I’d break my wallet if I bought it LOL!

Correct me if I’m wrong but are you Korean? I would love to know how Korean’s take care of their skin. My Korean friend who is 45, looks 30!!! (she keeps her secrets to herself, she just introduced me to this line haha) I don’t get it!!! LOL!

    Thanks so much!

You have a great blog Joseibi! πŸ™‚

Thank you, Suzanne!!! I am so happy to hear that this works for you too! I know the price is steep but it works so it’s worth it!! Not sure about the $800 cream though – at that price you are better off getting a cosmetic treatment at the spa! πŸ˜›

I am not Korean but I am often mistaken for one, which I take as a compliment! πŸ™‚ Korean and Japanese women have great skin and they often look so much younger than they actually are. Just amazing genes + good skincare regime and technique I think! πŸ™‚

    Hi Joseibi,

I am currently using History of Whoo Seol’s line. I am in my late 20s, and have dehydrate/combo skin. My skin is dry on the cheeks, and oily in my Tzone. I find that Seol’s line is not hydrating enough, but now I used Soo Yeon cream along with the whitening cream. It works well.

But before I started the Seo’s regime two months ago, my forehead started to break out after I used Shiseido White Lucent line. It doesn’t get any better after i stop used it. My forehead has clogged pores, that turned into cystic acne. The new pimple is usually close to the old scar. I don’t think this is due to hygiene, because I cleanse with a Clarisonic’s brush twice a day. My forehead tends to get oily around mid day, that I have to blot. Do you think this essence will help me? Thank you.

      Dear Kooslee,

Acne is rarely caused by hygiene (actually, most people I know with acne are extremely clean people!), I agree with Maria, it’s best to have your skin looked at and see what’s the cause. I remember a year ago there was a reader here who posted similar things, she was asking which line is the best, and spent lots of money on high end products, only to break out more and more, until she finally took our advice and saw a dermatologist, and found out she had rosacea all along!

Seol is definitely not hydrating enough, it’s only good for whitening and I also use other creams over Seol just to keep my skin adequately moisturized. The alcohol in the Seol Balancer is very strong – it evaporates quickly if you use it with a cotton pad – so if your skin is sensitive it can also trigger a reaction too. I didn’t have any success with White Lucent either.

    Hi, Koslee.
I don’t think that actually any over the counter cosmetic products will help. (I have been suffering from adult acne for ages). It is hormonal and unlikely linked to White lucent. My advice is to go to a proper dermatologist. I have went through a treatment recently and it worked. The doctor will likely prescribe you some topic antibiotic cream, maybe oral antibiotics ( depending on condition), will give a set of special creams and a face wash. After 3 months of treatment the skin condition will be stable and you can return to your usual beauty routine. During my treatment in Switzerland my doctor (a very famous dermatologist) made me ditch all my products and prescribed only la Roche posay line. Just a simple moisturising cream and that was it. Hope it helps:-) don’t delay your visit like I stupidly did (like 10 years I was thinking of it)

    Hi Maria,

Yeah, I haven’t had acne in ages, and suddenly two months ago. Pimples just popping up all over my forehead. I think it might be a good idea to go see a dermatologist. I just hate to wait for weeks before I can see a doctor due to appointment. But I wonder if i has anything to do with my skincare regime because break out only pertains in my tzone area. Thank you, I will make an appointment tomorrow.

Hi, I don’t think that the regime has triggered it seriously. Just keep the t-zone clean of any oily moisturizing substances for a while. Typically avoid any creams on it. Keep it simple to avoid spreading bacteria. Maybe use a simple thing like La Roche posay’s tolereane and a sunblock. Don’t invest in the really expensive things like bichup before your skin condition becomes more stable:-) hope this helps.

    Hi Maria

My dermatologist will be able to see me next week. Yeah I just cross my finger that it is not related to my skincare. Because I invested a lot of money on History of Whoo Seol’s line. I will follow your advice on keeping balancer, serum, lotion off my forehead for now to see if it will improve. πŸ™‚ Thank you very much.

    Hi,

My dermatologist prescribed Minocin and Retin A for me to use at night along with OTC benzoyl cleanser. Joseibi, do you know if it is alright to continue my regular Seol’s skin care routine with retin A? Should i put it last or first?

      Dear Kooslee,

The Retin A and Benzoyl products will dry out your skin, and there is a fair amount of alcohol (which you can feel) in Seol’s products. I don’t think Seol will harm you, but your skin may be quite ‘raw’ from the Retin A and benzoyl cleanser. You may benefit more from using a good hydrating moisturizer like Dr. Ci:Labo’s Aqua Collagen Gel to heal the skin. Maybe if you finish with your current Retin A treatment you can start Seol? If you do use it together, I would recommend using the Retin A first since it is a treatment product for your first concern (e.g. acne), after your cleanser. Go with your instinct though – if your skin is red and raw I would recommend replenishing the moisture rather than whitening. I personally believe in treating one problem at a time, and once your skin recovers a bit you can target the other concerns later. πŸ™‚

    hi joseibi,
wanna ask if I were to mix this into seol line, should I use it before or after seol’s essence?
and do u think if I use it in the morning along with sulwhasoo’s balancing water+emulsion, would it be too rich? or should I just use water+essence and skip emulsion?
fyi my skin is oily dehydrated, with visible dryness in my cheek area,,I was thinking to use sum37 products since I like the natural idea, but someone said it maybe too early for my 23y.o skin,,but I have this fine lines in my forehead n around my lips n also under my eyes, so I’m thinking maybe I need an anti aging products already? but it could also probably bcoz of my dehydrated skin >.<
thank u very much joseibi, waiting 4 ur next review ^^

      Dear ReY,

The Bichup Ja Saeng Essence, if you use it during the day with the Balancing Water & Emulsion, could be a little too oily since you have oily skin. It leaves a somewhat emollient film on your skin, more like lipid than water, so if you are dehydrated oily, you may find it a tad too rich for daytime, but for nighttime it could be ok, maybe skip it on your T-zone and just use it on your cheeks (at night).

Ja Saeng didn’t help with my fine lines on my forehead though, nothing other than SKII’s Facial Treatment Mask works for me so far, anti-wrinkle is hit or miss for me, some worked but the results are temporary. Very tricky, and of course, expensive too! You are really young, the fine lines are most likely just dehydration lines, if you can get that balance they will not become wrinkles. If you want to try SKII FTE or the mask it may help, it plumps those fine lines well for me. I think I will return to SKII because nothing seems to be working on mine, and now that I am 35, I am afraid they will become real wrinkles! πŸ™

Hi Joseibi, I know that Gmarket Korea seems to be somewhat too difficult to navigate, but have you checked out getting Hannule via kgoodshop? I honestly would say that the Go Gyeol Jinaek line is one of the best for dehydrated skin(try getting the essence which is really very thin and like a brown ginseng serum, and absorbs easily), and even the basic Chae Eum line too. Right now, they came up with the Go Gyeol Soo(water) line, which might be similar in texture to Su:m 37 waterfull line, or Hera Aquabolic line.

    thx for the reply joseibi!
so if I were to only use it during nite, should I put it before or after seol’s essence?
I’m only getting samples for now, so if it doesn’t do much for me, I’d probably try sum37 in the end, despite its being too ‘old’ for me,,I’m desperate for a gud hydration >.<

    Dear ReY,

You should use the Seol Essence in the mornng then Ja Saeng Essence at night. It is a better (and more economical) option than using both at once. However, if you choose to use both then it would be Seol Essence first then Ja Saeng Essence after.

    Hi Joseibi,
    Thank you for your blog.
I’m a mother of 4 little ones under 8 πŸ™‚ I know.. I loose count of them too sometimes.. Been in Australia for over 20 years now originally i was from HK.
I’ve seriously neglected my skin πŸ™‚ but as of 3 days ago, I have decided its not too late to look after my freckles (which is All over the face!) and dehydrated skin. I am 35 and don’t know much about Korean cosmetics. But since I haven’t met one Korean girl with bad skin, I am quite certain than k Skincare is what I would like.
I have read your blog on The History of Whoo.. Seol line. And I was so excited to see the disappearance of your freckles and thus thought a glimmer of hope to my skin.

I just want to ask, would this still be the whitening line you recommend for effectiveness for freckle treatment? Cos I noticed your review was 3 years ago now and they’ve seen had an ?updated version of Seol. Do you still recommend it? Has anything pop up over the last 3 years you think I can try?

I noticed in your blog u said its not v hydrating. if I start with the basic line without the Jinaek program (too exy for now), and just change the moisture cream at the end to a more hydrating one, would that be ok?
Is there one u will recommend?

    Thank you for your help!
I’ve been googling and learning all these new things last few days and I don’t have time for it! I’ve been seriously neglecting my kids doing it…. That’s why I am desperate enough to message … πŸ™‚ my first post in blog btw. πŸ˜€

    Appreciate it heaps!
    Kind regards, jen

I apologize for this super late reply…haven’t checked comments in a long time πŸ˜‰ To quickly answer your question – Seol was effective, but no, not hydrating enough. My freckles have returned since (I go to the Caribbean every year)…and I have gotten older than the last time too, so I am sure that Seol is not hydrating enough for me now.

I am currently testing OHUI White Extreme and loving it. It was a sponsored experience (supplied by a company that sells OHUI) which I will review later. It contains peptides and it’s leaps and bounds more hydrating (but not greasy) than Seol, and I am having results from it too. I would recommend this over the Seol, though Seol provides pretty quick results.

Busy mom, with 4 kids, deserves a break and I hope you get good rest! March break is coming up so I am not looking forward to it! LOL

    Hi Joseibi
Great blog! Are you still using the history of Whoo Bichup Ja sang essence? I am wondering that this is supposed to be used in place or after the Sulwhasoo Frist care serum. I think after reading your blog and other Korean skincare blogs, I got over excited and purchased quite a few things from both brands so now I am not sure if I can use them together and which order! I really appreciate your advises on this!
    Thank you!
