Product Review: Sofina Primavista Moisture Coat Base SPF15 PA++

Sofina Primavista Moisture Coat Base, 25g, US$34 at

Welcome to the new and (hopefully) improved!

This was my most recent Adambeauty purchase, a desperate attempt to save my Sofina Primavista Liquid Foundation UV, which cost US$55 at the time (bought it before it was available on Adambeauty for much less). The foundation was slightly too dark for me (BO-5), but the main problem was that it lacked any staying power. I read some positive reviews about the Moisture Coat Base on, which was rated highly for its moisturizing properties as well as keeping smearing at bay, so I decided to try it out. This cost about US$34.00 on Adambeauty, so it wasn’t cheap either. For the amount I already spent perhaps I should have just given up the foundation!

Anyway, back to the product. This is for winter use as it just came out for the fall/winter season for 2012. I hate the silicone feel of my Tarte primer (TARTE CLEAN SLATE PORELESS 12-HR PERFECTING PRIMER) – it felt like my skin couldn’t breathe with such a thick and gunky layer, and it didn’t prevent smearing. Anyway, I wanted something more like an essence. I had once tried the Jill Stuart primer which was like an essence and I really liked it, so I was hoping to have the same in Sofina Primavista Moisture Coat Base. However, this doesn’t feel like an essence, but a thick lotion (somewhere between a lotion and a light cream); but it goes on thick and doesn’t spread thin easily. It feels like Laura Mercier’s hydrating primer but thicker and harder to spread. The recommended amount is 8mm (diameter), but I find myself having a hard time spreading so little since the primer dries rather quickly. It leaves a somewhat matte finish and does not feel oily at all, which I am glad. But I can’t say I am too fond of the texture, because it doesn’t feel that moisturizing.

As for extending the wear of the Sofina Primavista Liquid Foundation UV I already have, this really doesn’t. I had used this Moisture Coat Base alone under the foundation but the foundation smeared just the same. I ended up having to use Smashbox Photo Finish Primer Light in addition to the Moisture Coat Base on my forehead, nose and chin just to keep the smearing to a minimum. I do not have oily skin, by the way – right now I would say dehydrated combination leaning towards dry.

So, it was very disappointing, because I have spent almost US$90 on the Sofina base and foundation! For that money, I could have gotten something that works. This didn’t work for me, though I still use it as a base anyway. Both Laura Mercier and Smashbox make much better primers than this, and I should have just gone back to the Jill Stuart one!
