Smashbox Sheer Focus Tinted Moisturizer SPF 15, 1.7 oz, US$30.00

I redeemed 100 points from my Beauty Insider account at Sephora to get a deluxe sample (5ml tube) of this tinted moisturizer because of my dissatisfaction with the Kanebo Freshel Moist Lift BB Cream. I wanted to try one more tinted moisturizer before committing to a full size tube of Laura Mercier’s Tinted Moisturizer since the price is steep. This sample comes in Luminous, sort of a universal luminizer with just a hint of color, and is oil-free.

The texture is thick when it comes out of the tube, but it surprisingly blends and spreads very easily on my skin. It is light, not greasy at all and I thought it was a very nice texture, except that for dry skin like mine, this won’t be a one step kind of deal. You will need your own skincare (if you have dry skin) and sunscreen (this is only SPF15 – I would advise using a higher SPF under) underneath. But the beauty of this is, it gives your skin a very subtle but nice glow, and if you are like me, with clear skin, it evens out your complexion just a little bit, without streaks or smearing. This particular shade, since it is not very pigmented, just blends into your own skin tone, and doesn’t require powder to set. The staying power is good even without a primer under it. My only complaint is that it’s not a one step product – if it were more hydrating, and comes with a higher SPF, it would have been exactly what I was looking for!

Laura Mercier’s Tinted Moisturizer, in comparison, is richer, hydrates better, and has SPF20 (wish it were slightly higher but at least it doesn’t contain oxybenzone). It’s US$12 more though. Both of them don’t offer much coverage at all but I really don’t need it. There are just too many high coverage foundations and powders and not enough sheer ones for people who don’t require much coverage or want that heavy makeup feel and look. If they can truly make it a one step product (that includes not having to set with powder and a higher SPF) that would be great!

I have a tube of LM TM, it’s nice. My skin is far from perfect but I too prefer light to medium coverage and use concealer versus heavy makeup. Just curious, between the two, if you have to pick, which one would you pick? Thanks.

      Dear Beautiful Canvas,

Between Smashbox and Laura Mercier, I will have to go with Laura Mercier’s TM, I find it a lot more moisturizing. Even the oil-free version is a lot more moisturizing than Smashbox’s. But I guess it depends what skin type you are too, if you have oily skin the Smashbox version is very matte, but for my dry skin, definitely LM! 🙂
