I have read so many good things about Laura Mercier’s “Flawless Face”, even though I am not even in need of foundation, I ended up buying a set that comes with two Tinted Moisturizers and a bonus trial size Foundation Primer. I generally find that though many products call themselves ‘primers’, few really extend the wear of your base makeup; some felt no different from a regular moisturizer or worse, didn’t do anything for me at all (e.g. DHC’s Q10 base). I have read on Laura Mercier’s website that to use her Tinted Moisturizer, she recommends using her Foundation Primer underneath. I know many brands try to promote their products the same way, but in this case, I want to report that she is right.

Laura Mercier’s foundation primers come in 4 formulations – regular (this one), oil-free, mineral and hydrating. I wanted the hydrating one, but the set didn’t come with that version. Anyway, the regular foundation primer, the one I have right now, is a colorless gel that goes on very easily. It has no fragrance, and has a very light, water-based gel texture. It absorbs instantly without any silicone feel. I really like that because some of the primers (like Amazing Cosmetics or DHC’s Velvet Skin Coat) make me feel like a strange greasy slick with too much silicone, to a point that the makeup slides right off instead of binding to it.

Unlike many other foundation primers I had used, Laura Mercier Foundation Primer acts as a magnet, so any subsequently applied base makeup adheres to it properly, no sliding off, no slick feeling. I put this under Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer and I cannot think of a better combination, because without the primer, the tinted moisturizer won’t stick as well.

My only gripe, of course, is that I need something more moisturizing. I needed the Hydrating version. But if you have normal skin to combination skin, this is a great primer that really does extend the wear of your foundation by grabbing it tight completely. Don’t be afraid of the oils in this product – this is a super light primer and doesn’t feel the least bit oily at all.

Both Foundation Primer and Tinted Moisturizer by Laura Mercier are water-based, you will feel it, so even oily skin should be ok with it, though for oily skin you can always go with the oil-free versions of the same products.
