Kevyn Aucoin The Sensual Skin Enhancer in SX07, 0.63oz/18g, US$45.00

I have heard many great things about Kevyn Aucoin’s Sensual Skin Enhancer used as a concealer, and I decided to give it a try. I bought this at ebeauty.ca (for US customers, this can be purchased at dermstore.com) for CAD$49.00. Ebeauty.ca used to be dermstore.ca but Rogers bought it over; however, the stock still comes from the US so if you are interested ordering, be prepared to wait a couple of weeks for delivery!

Official description:

The Sensual Skin Enhancer was created to mimic the appearance of healthy, radiant skin. It can be used as a spot foundation, concealer, all-over foundation, highlighter (choose a shade lighter than your actual skin tone) or mixed with your moisturizer for a tinted moisturizer effect – the possibilities are endless! Honey and jojoba oil create a soft, dewy finish as well as lend themselves to the formula’s silky texture. It may be applied with the fingers, a brush or a sponge (wet or dry) for any desired finish.

I do not use foundation but the main purpose of using this product is to conceal my dark circles. I have Kevyn Aucoin’s Dew Drop Powder Foundation in SX07 (part of the Sephora clearance sale at the time – though I have zero need for it!) and it was a perfect match, so I went for the SX07 again, even though the description of the Sensual Skin Enhancer says to choose one shade lighter.

I am actually glad I chose the same shade, not lighter though. The SX07 shade is a light shade with neutral-yellow undertones which is exactly what my skin is. After using The History of Whoo’s Gongjinhyang:Seol whitening line, I find that my skin is much less yellow, to a point that the  OC10 or OC20 shades in Japanese makeup actually look too orangey on me now. The SX07 shade is more or less neutral with very very little yellow undertones, so if you see my picture and you fall more or less under the same skin tone as me, then you will be fine with SX07.

The Sensual Skin Enhancer is hands down the most pigmented foundation/concealer I have ever used! The reviews I have read weren’t kidding; even one smidgen of it is enough to do a large area. If you use a small rice grain amount it’s enough to do your whole face! So even though at first glance, the price seems very high for a mere 18g, this could really last you a whole year or more (especially if you use it as a concealer). It goes on smooth and blends easily, though I had a really hard time using it the first few times because even a tiny bit was too much as a concealer and I ended up having to smear it outside my dark circle area.

The coverage is full. This is really the fullest coverage you can get. But as a concealer, I find that a pink or peach based shade will counteract dark circles better; so even with full coverage with this product, it fails to conceal my dark circles. I ended up having to use a lot of highlighting powder to top this off, and if the light is directly above me, the dark circles still show. If I look straight ahead or up they don’t show.

I can imagine if someone really needs a full coverage foundation, this is the perfect product. But because I need it as a concealer and it is not concealing my dark circles, I have little use for it. So unfortunately I had to send it back, since this isn’t cheap. I would recommend it if you need a heavy duty foundation to cover blemishes, though if you have oily skin this will feel heavy on you.

By the way, Kevyn Aucoin claims it doesn’t do animal testing, though it is not listed on PETA’s website one way or the other. The Sensual Skin Enhancer is made in Japan (which may be why it’s so good).
