I bought this product solely because it claims to minimize the appearance of pores, and that I needed a higher SPF than 15 as a base. (I would have preferred to have at least SPF30) Kanebo Coffret D’or Full Keep Base UV EX just came out weeks ago, the EX version being an upgrade from last year’s; and I bought it at ichibankao.com for about US$38.00, which I received in just 4 business days.

When I opened the package, I was surprised at how tiny this little bottle was. It contains only 25ml of the makeup base, which is puny; but still, the bottle is really tiny. (I have tiny hands to begin with)

This is the kind you have to shake before using, by the way. The texture is very thin and fluid, very much like the Biore sunscreen I had last year which was a third of the price; but to my surprise, the Biore sunscreen actually kept my sebum (I have dehydrated combination skin) at bay much better than Kanebo Coffret D’or Full Keep Base UV EX. Both have mattifying effect, except Kanebo Coffret D’or Full Keep Base UV EX is slightly tinted (pink-white) which doesn’t quite show up on your skin unless you overuse the amount recommended. It is supposed to control oil(sebum) and sweat. After a couple of hours, I need to blot my face already, which isn’t too promising as far as oil-control goes. Also, I find wearing this very uncomfortable as if I was wearing a thin stretchy film all day.

Ok – let’s evaluate what I bought this for and how this fares. Sorry the before pictures are graphic – the pores near my nose are pretty big! The picture above is an extreme close up. No retouching.

Kanebo Coffret D’or Full Keep Base UV EX has light diffusing effect so you will see how it works on the pores.

Immediately after applying Kanebo Coffret D’or Full Keep Base UV EX and before any other product, my pores look concealed. The mica in the base softens the look of pores so they aren’t as obvious.

But when I apply a sheer foundation like Maquillage Essence Rich White Liquid UV Foundation, which is a very light, runny foundation with texture very similar to the base, it actually works. With my Too Faced Primed & Poreless primer, I still have to pat the foundation on the pores so it doesn’t sink into the pores; but with Kanebo Coffret D’or Full Keep Base UV EX, the foundation does not sink into the pores. These pictures are taken without flash by the way – just under natural light in the morning.

After the foundation, I apply Shiseido The Makeup Translucent Loose Powder with a powder brush (from Too Faced), and the pores are barely noticeable. I mean, you can still see them up close, but nobody will get that close to inspect my pores (hopefully not). 😛

So, despite the mediocre oil-control properties, this base does conceal pores pretty well. Considering Benefit’s Porefessional at 0.75oz at US$30/CAD$36 which has no SPF, this all-over base isn’t too bad for the price. I just wish it actually extended the wear of foundation though – this really doesn’t – and the uncomfortable wear on the skin is another drawback if you have dehydrated or drier skin.

Bottom line: great for pores, but lacking in oil control. I tend to use this only on areas with dilated pores (as pictured above) instead of all over.
