Product Review: Benefit Cosmetics Stay Don’t Stray

Benefit Cosmetics Stay Don't Stray, US$24.00

After my disappointment with Kanebo Coffret d’or’s eyelid base, which made all my eye makeup stray, I was curious to try Benefit Cosmetics’ Stay Don’t Stray, a 360 degree primer for concealers and eyeshadows.

How it works:

This dual-action primer works 360 degrees around the eyes to make concealers and eyeshadows really stay put. Concealers never crease and eyeshadows stay vibrant and true. Stay Don’t Stray also preps, protects, AND perfects:

Preps: The lightweight formula blends seamlessly into skin, brightens eye area to minimize the appearance of fine lines, and comes in a universally flattering nude shade.
Protects: Hydrates with sodium hyaluronate to lock in moisture, fights signs of aging with Vitamins C & E, and is paraben-free.
Perfects: It’s long-wearing to keep makeup looking fresh, locks on ALL concealers & eyeshadows and prevents creasing of eye makeup.

Because my eyeliners tend to smear or fade on me, I tried Stay Don’t Stray with all my liners to see whether it works. I had tried it with my Kate cream eyeliner, and a regular long wearing eye pencil, and find that although my Kate Cream eyeliner still smeared, the eye pencil didn’t. Although it claims to be crease-free, I find that *some* of my shadows do crease over time (my Dior Iridescent 5-color quad), though not all. As much as the product claims that it locks in moisture, I do find that it’s drying, but I guess it has to bind to the skin well, otherwise the other products will stray.

Although it is not the perfect eyelid primer, it still makes my eye makeup stay put from 7am to 11pm. You can even use this on its own by the way, since the shade is meant to be a neutral nude one, unless you have darker skin. As small as the bottle looks, you only need to use very little so one bottle will last a long time.

By the way, this does sting a little on my lids when I first apply it. The stinging persists until I blend it completely. The product dries very quickly after that.

(For your reference: I have dry eyelids and very sensitive eyes.)

    Hi Joseibi,

It’s been awhile since I leave a comment eventhough I still always come back and check your site. Glad you lift the registration required to comment. I remember last year I had a question about online store and you gave me such a thorough advise, it was a few paragraphs 🙂 I still appreciate that till this day because I find that most bloggers don’t even take the time to answer your question left alone writing a few paragraph. So, I guess I am just stopping by to say hi 🙂

If you find stay don’t stray too dry, you might want to try Too Face Shadow Insurance. I find most eye primer dry or flaky until I smooth the shadow over it which I don’t like but I find TFSI have the creamiest consistency. I wrote a review on it here.

    Hi Joseibi,

Thanks for the comments on my blog, you are very kind too 🙂 If you ordered the TFSI, I really hope you’ll like it.

Have you tried Amore Pacific foundation? I saw it at Neiman the other day (love the packaging) and I was so tempted but goodness, $90 bucks for foundation is expensive!

    Dear Beautiful Canvas:

Sorry for the late reply! Was out of commission last week…computer problems. I haven’t tried the AmorePacific foundations yet – I normally don’t use any foundation or powder at all. From my experience using Laneige, Iope and Sulwhasoo foundations I find their shades a little too pink. For that price I would rather try SKII’s foundations, which I have always loved.
