Picture Product Review: Diorshow Waterproof Mascara

DiorShow Waterproof Mascara, US$24.00
DiorShow Waterproof Mascara, US$24.00

I had used Diorshow Mascara before (including the Blackout) and found the formula to be quite wet – it doesn’t dry quickly and can smudge in a short period of time. The waterproof version, despite not easily removable, is very similar to its non-waterproof version – it smudges easily if you apply more than one coats.

The big question is: is it worth US$24.00?

My answer is…no. First of all, this irritates my sensitive eyes, and is really hard to remove. It comes off with oil-based cleansers but some of those cleansers can sting my eyes. The mascara itself, I discovered, irritates my eyes. When I hold the wand close to my eyes in preparation for the application, my eyes start to water!

Once I put it on – and here’s the trick – you cannot layer it quickly. As with any waterproof mascaras, you have to let it dry between coats, so I am fine with that – except that with Diorshow waterproof mascara the drying time is slow. I have experimented this many times and found 5 minutes to be the requirement. 5 minutes! I don’t even take 10 minutes to put my makeup on in the morning and this takes up 5 precious minutes!

If I don’t wait and layer this on, then it will smudge very easily, usually within the first 2-3 hours. By midday I will have raccoon eyes. But here’s the strange part – as easily as it smudges, it’s really hard to remove. Lancome’s Bi-Facil and DHC’s cleansing oil are the only two that I can use without too much damage to my sensitive eyes, with Bi-Facil being more gentle and doesn’t require rubbing. DHC’s cleansing oil, which can remove virtually everything, has a hard time with this. I have to rub!

The cons aside, I want to show you whether Diorshow really gives you those ‘wow’ lashes you shell out US$24.00 for. The brush is quite big and bushy and one carefully applied coat is enough (I have medium length somewhat straight lashes to begin with), and both the waterproof and non-waterproof versions hold the curls well. Here are some pictures of my lashes using just one coat of Diorshow Waterproof Mascara:

It’s pretty good with just one coat, but because of the drying time and potential for smudging, I still prefer Lancome’s Hypnose. Also, if you have fairly sparse and thin eyelashes, this isn’t a good mascara to layer up and build on – smudging aside, layering will only give you almost tarantula-like lashes and it is not easy to use a big brush like this on shorter lashes (inner and outer corners). Hypnose does a far better job than Diorshow if you want definition, curls, length and volume. I can see people who have naturally long lashes that will benefit from using Diorshow, but I am not one of them so I will still stick to Hypnose!

I think the diorshow is a really great mascara. For me when I used diorshow it gives me the volume and seperation I want and it doesn’t smudge off.I also tried the iconic and it’s great for lenghtening.I even have oily skin and it stays on all day.I love diorshow mascara!

Glad it works for you! 🙂

I have read almost equal amounts of positive and negative reviews on Diorshow (checked out the ones on Sephora.com) – some report smudging while some swear by it. I wanted to love it but I prefer Lancome’s Hypnose. It’s an example of one product doesn’t fit all. 😉
