If you think Shiseido The Makeup’s eyeshadows are great, wait till you try Cle de Peau’s Eye Color Quad. At US$75.00, the price is steep, but once you have tried this, you won’t settle for anything less. Just like the rest of the collection, the Eye Color Quad contains Cle de Peau’s exclusive Hydro Wrap complex and argan tree oil, making the application smooth and non-drying in the eye contour area. The finish is flawless, silky and resistant to smudge, creasing and fading.

It also has a keychain component (not shown) which can be attached to your purse or keys. This limited edition item is available in 2 colors, #001 Parisienne Chic and #003 French Chic.

The new collection for Spring is quite large and is supposed to create the essential Parisian look of French women. The colors are mostly pinks, beiges and neutrals, very soft yet sophisticated.

I was surprised to see that Shiseido The Makeup didn’t come out with a new eyeshadow quad as it usually does in every season, but after seeing what is being launched, my excitement is just the same! I have long been a big fan of Shiseido The Makeup lipsticks. I have been using them for more than 8 years and that is most of my adult life! I always find that Shiseido’s lipsticks are so light and yet moisturizing, even after you take them off, your lips still feel moist, and yet when you have them on, you don’t feel a thing.

The most exciting reason for this time of the year is the preview of Spring colors. While Autumn/Winter can be quite predictable with richer colors, for Spring, anything goes! Bobbi Brown has a new collection called Blushed Pink, which consists of some sparkly eye shadow, pink blush and neutral lips, and is so flattering on almost all skin tones.

Dr. Ci:Labo is a cosmeceutical brand (think Murad or Dr. Perricone) from Japan that has been selling in the US (and other Asian countries) for many years. Joseibi.com used to carry Dr. Ci:Labo products and they always had great reviews and feedback from our customers. While there are many products in this brand, one of them really stands out, and has been one of our best selling products during our ecommerce operation – Aqua Collagen Gel.

Although this is not beauty-related, this is pretty cute news for ladies like me, who, since childhood, had adored Hello Kitty (fellow fans include my favorite singer, Mariah Carey!). The world’s very first and only Hello Kitty hospital (authorized by Sanrio) opened in Taiwan!

We have all pined for Japanese brands that are only available in Asia – Ipsa, Ettusais, Lunasol, RMK, etc. But how about lines or products from American brands that are only sold in Asia?

Take Estee Lauder’s Nutritious, for example. It is basically a collaboration with Japanese manufacturers/labs, to create this very attractive line of products that is only available at Nordstorm (only a few products of the whole line are available) in the US, and selected duty-free shops at the airports in Canada, and nowhere else except in Asia. (I am not sure why that is, given that Estee Lauder is a major American brand and a line that uses pomegranates as main ingredients, especially in this day and age when everybody is talking about anti-oxidants.)

There is always much debate on the need for toners. In the west, such as US and Canada, there is generally not much of a great push for toners, at least not by major American skin care; however, toners in Asia are often promoted heavily. In Japan, for example, toners are considered more important than moisturizer in a 4 or 5 step routine, and some toners are even more expensive than creams.

The question is: are toners really necessary?

Toners are usually used right after cleansing (with the exception of Albion toners which are to be used after moisturizers). It is often the second step in a normal skin care routine. People who swear by toners feel that toning lotions (in Japan toners are called lotions) complete the cleansing process by eliminating traces of cleansers and makeup, wiping off dead skin, and hydrating the skin after cleansing, while people who don’t use toners think that toners have no added benefits to a skin care routine.

I don’t have wrinkles, but I do have dehydration fine lines that started to appear on my forehead. Because my skin is dehydrated and quite dry during winter, I find it hard to keep it hydrated, and therefore, those fine lines remain. Despite sampling many different brands and products, I have yet to find one that smooths those lines more than temporarily – until I used Dior’s Capture Totale.

When it comes to face care, I have to say that Sulwhasoo is, by far, the best brand there is. From its unique, luxurious Korean packaging to the pleasant aroma of Korean herbs, Sulwhasoo exemplifies what prestigious skincare should be – effective, functional and fancy. It’s the kind of brand that is so attractive, you would rather skip a few dinners and movies and splurge to get even just one item.
